Q. How can I tell if a Nestlé Chocolate product is “Made in a Peanut Free Facility”?

A. The ‘Peanut Free’ seal that appears on all Nestlé Snack Size Bars, accompanied by the ‘Peanut Free’ Promise, identify these bars as “made in a peanut free facility”. As always, we recommend that consumers read the ingredient label as the ultimate source of information on product content. On the outer carton, we remind the consumer to “Read the Ingredient List Every time”. The ingredient statement on each Nestlé Snack Size Bar has no reference to nuts and peanuts and does not have any “may contain” warnings.

Q. How do we ensure our Facility is Peanut Free?

A. Assuring our products are made in a Peanut Free facility means that no peanuts/nuts or peanut/nut containing ingredients are used in our facility and our facility has rigorous quality control processes in place to ensure its peanut-free status:

  • Extensive raw material, in-process product and finished product testing programs
  • Regular audits of the facility
  • Supplier, Employee and Visitor protocols
-Nestlé requires its suppliers to undertake and document all necessary actions to ensure their materials have no potential for peanut/nut contact before arriving at the facility
-Employees undergo allergy-awareness training and are not permitted to bring peanuts/nuts or peanut/nut-containing items into the factory
-Visitors and contractors are required to follow the same rules as employees
  • Dedicated allergen control staff
  • Established Good Manufacturing Practices

Q. Why doesn’t Nestlé provide products that are Made in a NUT free facility, rather than just a PEANUT Free facility?

A. Nuts are not permitted in our peanut-free facility and this includes all nuts. Our no nut policy in our facility is strictly enforced, however since there are no commercially available tests for all nut proteins, we do not promise what we cannot ultimately measure or test. There are tests that we use regularly to test for peanut protein and this is therefore what we communicate to our consumers.

At Nestlé we are focused on consumer safety and product quality and we will only make a claim on our products when we can confirm with testing that they are free of any stated allergen.

Q. Why did you change your Peanut Free Seal?

A. Starting in January 2007, Nestlé will transition its ‘Peanut Free’ Seal from one that states “Peanut Free” with an image of two children to one that states “Made in a Peanut Free Facility” with an iconic no peanut symbol. This was done for the following reasons:

  • As more manufacturers begin to offer Peanut Free products, it is important to have a reasonably consistent ‘peanut free’ icon in market, which will allow for better comprehension by consumers. The industry standard has moved to an image of a Peanut with a slash through it.
  • Made in a Peanut Free Facility” is a more accurate representation of the Nestlé Promise. Assuring our products are made in a Peanut Free facility means that our facility has rigorous quality control processes in place to ensure its peanut-free status.  This includes extensive raw material, ingredients and finished product testing programs, supplier and employee protocols as well as regular audits, employee training, dedicated and certified allergen control staff and established Good Manufacturing Practices

Q. Is MACINTOSH'S TOFFEE gluten free?

Q. Why am I having difficulty finding MACKINTOSH’S TOFFEE?

Mack Toffee is a Nestle original, loved by Canadians, and we are always looking for the best way to ensure the highest quality in our products. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have a temporary delay in availability that has made it difficult to find The Mack Toffee bar. We recognize its heritage and popularity in Canada, and we are working hard to begin shipping Canada's favourite toffee product as soon as possible. In the meantime, we encourage you to substitute the Mack Toffee 170g cello bag, which is available as usual at most mass merchandisers and grocery stores.

Q. Is the palm oil contained in your peanut-free line of COFFEE CRISP bars produced from the crushed nuts of an African palm?

A. Botanically, according to our suppliers, the source of the oil is the palm fruit; it is not a nut. It is very similar to a date. Palm oil is extracted from the outer soft, fleshy portion of the fruit, and palm kernel oil is oil extracted from the inner seed portion of the fruit.

Palm oil is not on any list of major allergens and is not a nut.

Q. The new ROLO label no longer carries an allergy alert. Can you tell me why?

A. The factory that makes ROLO has been converted to peanut/nut-free status, and the new label will not contain an allergy alert. However, Nestlé encourages consumers to read the label every time, as manufacturing policies and ingredient suppliers are subject to change. If in doubt, please call Nestlé Consumer Services toll free at 1 800 387-4636.
